Services provided by an Independent Dental Hygiene practitioner is similar to the services received in a dental office.

Dental and Periodontal Examination

A full mouth assessment is performed during all cleanings to check for possible decay, oral cancer, and other diseases of the oral cavity.

Oral Cancer Screening

According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, someone dies from oral cancer every hour of every day in the United States alone. When you have your dental cleaning, your dental hygienist is also screening you for oral cancer, which is highly curable if diagnosed early.

Dental Hygiene Cleaning

A dental hygiene cleaning involves the removal of plaque and calculus from the tooth and root surfaces in order to restore and maintain gingival health. This is also called scaling and root planing. The last stage of the cleaning is a polish where remaining bacteria and staining is removed from the tooth surface.

Stain Removal

Stain is easily removed by use of either polishing paste or prophy jet.
Polishing paste is a fluoridated pumice applied to the teeth with a non-latex rubber polishing cup. Prophy-jet consists of a high powered, baking soda/salt-water spray able to remove stubborn stain from tooth surfaces that the prophy polisher cannot access.

Pediatric Dental Hygiene Care

Children should begin seeing a Dentist or Dental Hygienist at the age of 3 to assess tooth eruption, adequate spacing, jaw alignment, possible oral habits (thumb sucking, tongue thrust, mouth breathing, clenching or grinding of teeth) and baby bottle caries. All findings will be recorded and discussed with the parent/s. Referrals will be given accordingly. X-rays are generally taken around the age of 6 which will then require a visit to the dentist.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens the enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. It occurs naturally in all water sources. Studies show that fluoride reduces cavities in people of all ages and is effective and safe when used correctly. The correct use of fluoride has been said to have dramatically reduced tooth decay over the past few decades. Fluoride application is a selective treatment and is not recommended for everyone.

Pit and Fissure Sealants

A thin protective plastic coating is placed on the first and second permanent molars of children as soon as the teeth erupt which is generally between the ages of 6 and 12. Sealants aid to prevent plaque from finding its way into the deep crevices of the new molars thus causing cavities. Application of sealants is relatively quick and easy, and usually takes about 5 minutes per tooth. It does not require freezing or altering of the tooth and therefore can be applied by your dental hygienist.

Sports Guards

Professional sports guards are individually custom fit and come in an array of colours. They play a key role in almost all sports by primarily protecting the teeth from unexpected tooth loss or injury. They not only protect the teeth but also the gums and supporting bone by absorbing and redistributing the forces generated by a traumatic blow. A professional sports guard fits securely in the mouth and cannot be easily removed in order to provide optimal protection. Pro-Form mouth guards were designed by dental and sports professionals! They are made of a double laminated thermoplastic polymer and are fitted to the unique structures of an athlete’s mouth. They are the only mouth guard material endorsed by professional sports organizations including the NHL and NFL. They offer superior protection because of an integrated palatal brace which protects the highly susceptible front teeth and a double layered material which dissipates traumatic forces and prevents concussions.

In-Office (1 Hour) or At-Home (2 Weeks) Tooth Whitening

In-Office ZOOM Whitening takes about one hour. A barrier is placed on the gums and surrounding tissues. Whitening gel is placed on the teeth and the ZOOM UV lamp is aimed at the teeth for 3 – 15 minute intervals. You can listen to your i-pod or watch TV while you whiten your teeth. At-Home Tooth Whitening involves two consecutive 10 minute appointments. The first visit involves taking upper and lower impressions of your mouth. On the second visit you receive fabricated bleaching trays along with a “2 week-Discus Dental 22% Carbamide Peroxide Whitening Kit”. Also included are extra whitening tubes for future touch-ups, and a tooth colour shade guide. Detailed instructions are given to ensure proper use.

Both methods are equally effective resulting in up to 8 shades lighter.
Some post sensitivity may occur and post-relief gel is included in every kit.
